Day 155: More of the Coba Excursion

Yesterday's rappeling photos were actually of the 2nd portion of the Coba Excursion. This was the first "level", climbing a pyramid. First we had to ride bikes through the jungle to get to the pyramid, and then up we went. This is one of the very few pyramids that you can actually still climb. I'm glad we didn't ask until the end of the excursion whether it was likely that this would be closed to climbing like the others on the Yucatan. I expected the guide to say something like they would want to protect this antiquity, but he said that once there's a death, then it would be closed.

Actually, climbing it was harder than coming down, although for many people, coming down is harder. I appreciated that Brian "spotted" me going up. Going up 125 steps!

I don't have photos for all the "levels" of this first excursion. The 3rd level involved a purification ritual with a Mayan shaman. The 4th level involved kayaking across a little lake, walking through tthe jungle, and then zip lining across the lake! I was totally freaked out by this. . . until I saw an entire family of spider monkeys in a tree taking in the sights of the crazy tourists. This is where I really wished I had a point and shoot in my pocket.

And then we got to have a delicious lunch prepared for us by the Mayan women in their village. I'll have to see if I can get some photos of this from my son.

Wow those are some steep steps. I would have had trouble coming down since I would have had to look down..

I love how active you were on your vacation! Sometimes I like to do that and sometimes I like to be a stump (usually related to whether my weight is up or down at the time LOL). What a cool pyramid. And a zip line is another one of those things I want to work up the courage to do.
