I Whacked my Husband, but It Wasn't His Fault!

I was having one of those nightmares. You know the kind. The kind where you're trying to ward off the Bad Guy, and you can't move. But I tried, and tried, and next thing I knew, I smacked my husband in his sleep! Fortunately, it wasn't that hard, and he didn't even wake up. Maybe this is a case of "Let Sleeping Dougs Lie. . . . . "

But maybe he deserved to be whacked, after all!

Later in the day, he said to me, and I quote "I just had this thought, all by myself, in my own head." (Literally, he said that! And he really is a smart guy!)

Because we have these huge piles of snow hanging down over our windows. That's a bad thing. It causes leaky roof problems, and broken things. And it makes winter even darker. Last winter, we hired some guys to come shovel the snow off our roof, and after we paid them lots of money, in the spring, we noticed lots of broken pieces from our roof on the ground all around the house. And it was very, VERY, expensive replacing our roof. . . .

So Doug's Really Great Idea in his own head was that he was going to get on a ladder outside, and throw a basketball over and over at the roof, knocking down the snow!

I voted "no." Thoughts in my head ran more along the lines of him falling off the ladder, the basketball damaging the roof, breaking a window, who was going to be grabbing that ball in the snow over and over and handing it back up to him, and that it really wouldn't knock much snow down.

So we opened the windows, took off the screens, and used brooms to at least knock the hanging down snow. . . down.

My coworker tells me there are actually these long, telescoping, rake thingies that we can use to rake the snow off our roof.

I bet it would be a REALLY GOOD IDEA to try and do this before the Siberian Arctic Express hits us in the next 7 days!

That stinks about the roof. That is crazy how the snow hangs like that over the windows!

I can remember one really extreme snow storm when they showed a method to get snow off the roof on the local news. It involved pvc pipe & garbage bags/plastic. Basically you used 2 long plastic poles with plastic between them that was about 2 ft. wide. Then you just slide them along the roof under the snow & it just slids off.

What they didn't tell you on the news was what would happen to you holding those poles with the snow sliding off the roof.

But - it did work!

you do know I meant slides not slid. I don't even know what slid is....

here's an example of what I was talking about - except I made my own & it had 2 poles with the plastic going between them.

That is such a lot of snow! Hope you are able to figure out a safe, non-roof-ruining way to get it off the roof. Loved your 'let sleeping Dougs lie' comment. You are too clever. Your blog posts always make me smile!

That is more snow than I dare to entertain the thought of. I love Doug's epiphany 'a thought he came up with all by himself in his own head'. I truly think wikipedia should use this as their definition. And put Doug's face beside it of course.

And who among us wives hasn't slapped "by accident" our spouses in the night - completely unawares and unintentional. Truly?!? [wink wink!]

Too bad about the roof - and glad you didn't let Doug go up - that's dangerous!

lol I would have gone along with the idea, had one of my sons rebounding while I was photographing :) Over the summer I whacked/slapped my dh in the head/face at least 4x..hard enough that he woke up startled and yelling. It was the way I was involuntarily flinging my arm in my sleep, thank God he didn't bruise!

Hope you are able to get the snow off without anymore roof problems!

I feel so bad for you and Doug having to deal with that. I can't even imagine that anymore.
I am just sympathising not rubbing it in. :)

LOL! Must be a family trait. Lee whacks me in his sleep every so often with his pillow. The problem is that I'm a light sleeper and then I stay up for hours thinking about appropriate retribution - like flushing the toilet when he's taking a shower. But then I come down and find that he made fresh coffee, or maybe he brushed the snow off my car, and I have to forgo my vengeance . . . at least that time . . .
